Introducing Hudson Chiropractor Dr. Laura Vassar

Oh boy was I ever a skeptic! And oh boy was I ever scared! I was 16 the first time I went to the chiropractor and I remember wondering how in the world "cracking" my back was going to help with the low back pain I was having, if getting adjusted was going to hurt and if it was going to make my problem worse.
For four months I couldn't bend over to tie my shoes, sit down, lie down or even brush my teeth without having excruciating back spasms. The whole thing started out of the blue when I bent over to tie my shoes one day and I couldn't get back up! I went to the medical doctor just to be told to "take these pills and do these back exercises". The pills barely took the edge off and it hurt too much to do the exercises, so I sat there and suffered for months, wondering if I'd ever feel normal again.
My oldest sister Karen was the one that finally talked me into going to the chiropractor. She had been going for a couple of years and had phenomenal results. She had been trying to convince the whole family to go get checked out so I finally listened because I was at wit's end and didn't know what else to do.
I will never forget the day I received my first adjustment because my life was never the same again. Dr. Barb Hicks was my chiropractor. After performing an exam and x-rays, then explaining the results, she gave me my first adjustment. Surprisingly, it felt good. Even more surprising to me was that later that night, it didn't hurt and I slept better than I had in months. By about the third adjustment, the low back pain started becoming a distant memory. But what happened next was what changed my life...
What I didn't tell you was that for years I suffered from agonizing headaches on a daily basis. I lived on a daily regimen of Tylenol or Advil often times taking up to four pills per day. Growing up, I was in and out of doctor's offices constantly with frequent colds, sinus infections, ear infections and ear aches, heartburn, stomach pain, digestive problems, and menstrual problems. When they couldn't find anything "wrong" with me, I was written off as a hypochondriac.
As I went in for my adjustments, the most amazing things started to happen. I noticed that I hadn't had a headache in a week. I thought it was a fluke until another week went by without a headache. To me, this was an absolute MIRACLE. I couldn't believe how good I felt. No headaches, no sinus pressure and I hadn't taken any pills. Gradually, I noticed other problems went away also. The heartburn, stomach pain and digestive problems went away. My monthly cycle became more regular and the cramps decreased drastically. I was AMAZED.
This entire time, Dr. Barb would educate me on what chiropractic was and why these problems that doctors and pills couldn't "cure" were suddenly going away on their own. She told me how the human body is designed to regulate, grow and heal itself. The body is controlled by the nervous system which includes the brain and spinal cord. The spinal cord in turn has nerves that branch off and go to every single organ, tissue, muscle and gland in the entire body. Nerves are how the brain and body communicate with each other to make sure everything is working properly. The problem comes when injuries to the spine heal incorrectly and, over time, cause the bones in the back to become misaligned which irritates the nerves. When the brain and body can't communicate properly, it can cause a whole host of problems, just like the ones I was having. Chiropractic didn't "cure" any of the symptoms I was having. Chiropractic released the pressure on my nervous system so my body could heal itself.
That was it, I was hooked. It all made so much sense to me and helped me so much that two weeks after my first adjustment I knew I wanted to be a chiropractor. I couldn't believe how much everything changed in such a short amount of time. I dedicated my life to being a chiropractor because I wanted to help people in this incredible way I had been helped. And all through the power of my own amazing body. No pills, no drugs, no surgery...just me.
After graduating from Florence High School in Northern Wisconsin in 1998, I earned my Bachelor of Science degree in Biology from Michigan Tech in the beautiful Upper Peninsula of Michigan in 2002. Next came Davenport, Iowa, home to Palmer College of Chiropractic where I graduated in 2005. After graduation I worked with another chiropractor in Lansing, Michigan until 2007, then moved to Hudson, Wisconsin to open my own practice and I couldn't be more excited to serve this wonderful community.
But enough about me!!! I look forward to meeting you in person and learning how we may be of service to you. Give our office a call, or email me using the link below and let’s arrange a time to explore your options. Thanks for visiting our site!
